The Effect of Non-Suckling and the Non-Removal of Milk upon Individual Mammary Glands in the Lactating Mouse *
نویسنده
چکیده
Whether lactation is a total response to suckling or whether an individual mammary gland must be suckled and drained for full secretory activity to be induced and maintained in it constitutes a controversial question. In guinea-pigs and rabbits, cessation of lactation and parenchymal involution occur in non-suckled glands as well as in glands which are being suckled but from which the removal of milk is prevented by ligation of the major galactophores.5' 6, 7, 8 Other workers, to the contrary, find that the mammary glands of rats continue to lactate under similar experimental conditions.9' 10, 11 The present study was designed to ascertain the degree of lactation in unsuckled and obstructed glands as well as to determine the general reaction of the parenchyma to these two conditions. The mouse is a favorable species for such an experiment because of the consistent level of secretory activity which is present in all glands during lactation, provided they are being suckled and drained.3 12 Cole3 has observed that some of the mammary glands of the mouse often show involutional changes when a very small litter is suckling.

Increased Litter Size and Suckling Intensity Stimulate mRNA of RFamide-related Peptide in Rats
Background RFamide-related peptide-3 (RFRP-3) inhibits gonadotropin releasing hormone (GnRH) and luteinizing hormone (LH) secretion in rats. This study evaluates the effects of litter size and suckling intensity on RFRP mRNA expression in the dorsomedial hypothalamic nucleus (DMH) of rats. MaterialsAndMethods A total of 32 pregnant and 4 non-lactating ovariectomized (control group) Sprague-Dawl...
متن کاملIncreased litter size and suckling intensity inhibit KiSS-1 mRNA expression in rat arcuate nucleus
Objective(s): The effect of litter size and suckling intensity on the expression of KiSS-1 mRNA in the arcuate nucleus (ARC) of rats were evaluated. Materials and Methods: Thirty two pregnant and four non-lactating ovariectomized (as control group) rats were used in this experiment. Lactating rats were allotted to eight equal groups. In three groups, litter size was adjusted to 5, 10, or 15 pup...
متن کاملEffect of lactation on the expression of gonadotropin-inhibitory hormone in dorsomedial and paraventricular nuclei of the rat hypothalamus
Introduction: Gonadotropin inhibitory hormone (GnIH) is believed to be an inhibitor of gonadotropin releasing hormone (GnRH) secretion. The role of GnIH in lactational inhibition of gonadotropin secretion is not well known therefore, the aim of the present study was to evaluate the effect of lactation on expression of GnIH in these nuclei of lactating and non-lactating rats. Methods: Ten po...

متن کاملLactation effect on the mRNAs expression of RFRP-3 and KiSS-1 in dorsomedial and arcuate nuclei of the rat hypothalamus
Introduction: Arginine-phenylalanine-amide-related peptide-3 (RFRP-3) and kisspeptin are believed to be inhibitor and stimulator of gonadotropin releasing hormone (GnRH) secretion, respectively. The aim of the present study was to compare the effect of lactation on the expression of RFRP-3 mRNA in dorsomedial hypothalamic nucleus (DMH) and KiSS-1 mRNA in arcuate nucleus (ARC) of hypothalamus...
